New Orleans
I had no time to blog this week...but I did want to blog a little bit about New Orleans. I just dont understand how a city like this can exsist in the United States. There are literally no laws. I could do anything short of murdering someone and get away with it. It is such a beautifully corrupt city. There is corruption at every level. It is alarming how corrupt it is. There were cops drinking beer in there patrol cars and there were live sex acts with their doors open to the public at 3 in the afternoon. This is just my refelction on a great city that I am ready to visit again. Ohhhh on another note, the media has done a terrible job portraying this city. Whenever they cover activities that happen in the city, and they show the same picture of the city under water. THe convention center says that they get professionals that call on a daily basisasking if the city is stil underwater. The media needs to cover the city in a truthful way.

The Other Boyln Girl
Pulled straight from the laws of power... natalie portman charecter utilizes those laws to manipulate those around her to get what she wants from them. much like i thought however, the laws eventually back fire on her and she ends up lonely (dead) and powerless. she did however use the laws to get to the power status that she wanted. just another example of how the laws can be applied.

Piracy...whats the big deal
Why is piracy such a big deal? People still go to the movies and still buy cds. So there are a bunch of peoeple that download them illegally, but during the 90's people made mixed tapes from the other tapes that were bought, but since people dont buy records anymore its probably not going to be the same as it was then. Back to the movies, people will still go see movies in the theatre and like jake said people are mainly watching those movies online because they are free. So these artists need to get off their igh horse and start making music and movies people want to buy and go see!!!!

Laws of Power
These laws are sooooo malicious. If you were to follow these directly you will have power but won't have any friends, but if that is your intent than these laws should do the trick. The stories are fascinating. What people will do for power is just astonishing, but to a certain degree, the same actions are taken by people everyday.
On a different note, the group project is working pretty well. We are excited about visiting different sites coming up. The beach is something that I love a lot. Coming from C of C, I lived at the beach for most of the first year. I think that it would be a good outlet for the student body and on day like Saturday, the beach would be packed!

story telling at the business level
Squirell Inc. brings up intresting points about story tellling in a presentation. I have never thought about it, but it is very true. I think about the most successful speakers that I have listened to and they all tell stories to push their points across. The points tend to become more personal and more relateable. We had a speaker last year talk to us about women's safety and how we all need to be aware. Well she opened her speech about how her best friend was murdered in college in her house. This story was shocking but it made me pay more attention to her and what she has to say. Just because of that story.

Turning over a New Leaf
Today starts the first day of my blog when I am supposed to routine. I am not very good at this whole blogging thing, but I am going to make it a priority. I am begining to really enjoy the laws. Its really intresting to read what some poeple wil do for power and/or money. I enjoyed the story to day about the french lady writer. I am always inspired by women who push the envelope and do what is not expected or accepted and get away with it. These group projects are interesting too. All ofthe groups are really interesting and they have all risen problems to the surface that I had not thought about before, but totally sympathize with. Lets hope that I blog after class or before the next on...keep fingers crossed.

Global Warming
The video watched made more sense than any argument for CO2 causing global warming. I called my dad after calss to talk to him about it and he was convinced that the video was going to be propaganda that the college system was feeding us, but when I explained to him the premiss, he got really interested. The movied peaked my interest a little bit and I want to educate my self a little more on global warming and its many causes. I do think that there is such a thing as global warming, but it is cyclical. I really enjoyed the movie and learned alot from it.

Am I honestly supposed to read a book about squirrels???
I must admit going into the Squirrel Inc. assignment I thought that it was going to stupid. A book about working squirrels, honestly???? The first few pages reitterated again why I think being a bartender should be a required job for most people, because you learn to read people, listen to people tell you about their lives, talk to complete strangers, interact with drunk people, and as a bonus perk you learn to mix all of those yummy beverages, but beside the point. As the book continues on I realize that the squirells arent really important and it is the message that is really important. I think that sometimes, I do this alot, in life we get caught up in the nit picky little details and we forget to look at the big picture and what it all means. Details are important, but I tend to fixate on them, to the point that I lose sight of the finish line and forget what I am doing. I am the person that picks out hte perfect format for something before I right it, forgeting completely that the paper and the words are important, not really anything else. I kind of use it as a procrastnation tool, but in other things as well i lose focus. I look forward to reading more in squirell inc, and truth be told I think that it is more interesting with the charecters being squirells than humans, I get caught up in the Disney factor of the book, picturing their cartoon world and glomouring it up as opposed to making them humans working in the monotinous business world.

Stage Fright
Public speaking tops my list of least favorite things to do (it might be second to swimming with sharks). I have been in multiple public speaking classes and have given a couple of speeches in my time, but everytime I get up to speek I feel the same onslaught of emotions. I get butterflies and then I stand up and say the first word and start to ramble. I am a very good rambler...I talk and talk and forget what I am supposed to talk about something.
That being said this speech was not that bad and the exercises done before the speeches started were actually quite helpful. Everyone in the class did really well and addressed topics that I didnt think of but are definetly issues on campus. They were entertaining and educational

48 Laws
Law number 6: Court All the Attention You Can
While reading this law I thought of the celebs in hollywood that pull stunt after stunt trying to keep their names in the magazines and in our minds. If one celebrity shows her bra, the next one goes pantiless. It is funny how this same thing has been going on for ages. It does'nt really look like thes people are getting power in the sense of king or queen of hollywood, but they are getting a certain degree of power. By keeping their name in the tabloids we are looking at what they are wearing, who they are with or what they think is cool. So in a twisted sense, these press whores are gaining power over us without us really knowing it. (wow i sound angry)

Dear Colleagues
Dear Peers,
I am writing you all today to let you know a little bit about myself in a few different capacities. As a student I tend to be very laid back. I try not to let the "stress" of school ever get to me. I tend to stay a half step in front of my studies, but I do procrastinate quite a bit. I always do my work; it just might be right down to the wire, as you can tell from this assignment. I like school alot and am eager to learn, but that means that if a class gets a little boring, I tend to zone out and get bored and start to complain about it. School has always been fun to me, but I understand why many people do not like it. One thing about school that I do not care for is the writing. I like the feeling of satisfaction experienced after writing a paper, but the actual writing part is no fun for me. I write very informally which tends to get me in trouble in a lot of english classes. I do not want to address the issue of my being a future prefessional, because I plan on not becoming one anytime soon. I do not like the idea of going into the working world; it implies that I need to be an adult, but I really do not want to become one. As a future professional I hope to be in a job that I can be very informal and not have to worry too much about the professional stuff. My parents own a business and I like ot feel semi-professional when ever I work for them, but I am always thankful when the summer is over and I can go back to being a student. The only real redeeming quality, beside the salary, in a real job is the new wardrobe that you get to purchase. Business clothes are so fun!!! As an individual, I am just that. I do not care much about what anyone thinks. I am me and thats ok with me if you do not like it, I am not going to change to make that happen. I hope that this shed a little light on who I am in these different capacities!
Kate
ps. I completely forgot to introduce myself, oops! My name is Kate Hausmann and I am a junior. I am a true southerner, born and raised in Georgia and moved to Hilton Head my freshman year of college. My Niece Natalie is a sophmore at Georgia Tech, but thats ok, we have fun! I am a member of a sorority and absolutely love every moment of it. I love my sisters (its kind of cheesy i know). If you have any questions just ask. I will let you know!!
